All I can say about this novel, is OMG! This story is one that is so profound that you don't so much read it as experience it! I was completely drawn in to Charlotte and Nicholas' story. I read the book over two days and the first night I was up until almost 4 a.m. I needed so badly to know what happened, but I also needed to get some sleep, so I finally cheated and read several chapters ahead by skimming the pages. And even after knowing most of what happened throughout the story and how the book ended, the next day I went right back to the page I had bookmarked and read on just as voraciously as I had the day before. I confess that I skipped ahead to the last pages of the book several times before I finally finished it. It was, for me, an all encompassing story.

The romance between Charlotte and Nicholas is extremely touching. Nicholas, Lord Harding, is heir to a Dukedom. He is a decorated war hero who is called home because his father, the Duke, is extremely ill. Before Nicholas can make his way home he is seriously injured. When he arrives at the estate he meets Charlotte Kittridge. Charlotte's father is the Duke's doctor and she works as her father's nurse. Charlotte is a very cerebral female, a spinster of 27 who is quite plain. Nicholas is a tortured hero. He is 30 years of age, extremely intelligent, with a commanding presence. The two first meet when Nicholas is brought home injured. Charlotte attempts to help him, but he is distrusting of the medical profession due to the questionable practices of the military doctors. In any event their relationship builds over the weeks and a bond develops between the two. Nicholas finds himself telling Charlotte things that he doesn't even like to think about much less discuss! The scene where he confesses his inability to read is one of the most touching ones I have ever read in a romance book, and it doesn't even have anything to do with the romance!

Nicholas chooses to confess his illiteracy to Charlotte even though he really didn't have to. He could have employed his usual avoidance techniques. When he says "I cannot...read" in that hesitating way, my heart ached for him. He was such a wonderfully intelligent man, but his family had convinced him that because he has a learning disability (which they did not know about during that era) he was ignorant and stupid. He feels that his inability to read renders him undeserving of Charlotte, while she believes that her shortcomings (looks, position, etc.) makes her unsuitable for him. Many years prior, Nicholas had promised his family that he would never marry and had agreed to his half brother taking over as head of the family and running the estates after their father. This he did because he believed that it would be best for his family and the dukedoms dependents.

Due to the inheritance laws at the time that dictated the eldest son was the heir, Nicholas would still be the Duke, though in name only. Paul, Nicholas' half brother is not a good person and his mother, Nicholas' stepmother, is just plain evil. Of course, during the course of the story, circumstances are revealed that changes all of that and with Charlotte at his side, Nicholas begins to believe in himself and his abilities. The story moved at a nice pace. And believe it or not, this little 200 page book covers a period of several months. I absolutely LOVED it!!! I will definitely be reading other books by this author. The next on my list to read is "A Secret Passion" I highly recommend "A Passionate Endeavor" as a wonderful read!

Set in 1814. Lord Nicholas Huntington returns home wounded from the war in hopes of seeing his father who is near death. His father continues to live thanks to Dr. Kittridge, the most talented physician in all of Europe. As the good doctor cares for his father, the doctor's daughter takes care of Lord Nick. All Lord Nick wishes to do is return to the war and leave everything else to his half brother, Lord Edwin. Dealing with his stepmother and Edwin is just more than Nick can seem to stomach.

Miss Charlotte Kittridge is proud to be her father's nurse. She knows she is not pretty and accepts that she is long past her prime. She wants only to learn from her father and help care for his patients. When Lord Nicholas arrives unconscious and then slightly delirious, she jumps into her nurse role, even against her patient's wishes. Charlotte is attracted to the man, but keeps her distance and treats him like any other patient. She and her father are kept busy tending the two lords. Yet Fate gives them an added burden anyway. Charlotte's cousin, "Alexandre" Lord Gaston, arrives in all his flirting glory.

Lord Nicholas finds his eyes searching out Miss Charlotte far too often. Her delicate touch and intelligent mind keeps him fascinated. Even though he is drawn to the lady, he must keep his distance. He promised his father that he would never marry. Yet seeing Alexandre vie for Charlotte's passion is just too much for him to handle.

***** Once again author Sophia Nash entices readers to lose themselves within her latest regency novel. And once again I find myself extremely glad that I did. There is much more going on than I am able to reveal without spoilers and quite a few more characters, each with their own unique personality. The people are so believable that I feel as though I actually know them. Sophia Nash breathes life into her characters in a way so few authors can. Highly recommended reading. *****

I thoroughly enjoy the way this author creates characters of such depth. They are flawed, they have weaknesses, they have strengths and I swear they truly live and breathe. This story is no different. It is also a remarkably poignant, though understated portrayal of the ignorance of society during that time - and in this respect, I am talking about society's perception of the H due to his inability to read, and the impact it is having on his life, and his future as the Duke.

The H snared my interest from the get-go and didn't let go at any point in the story. As for the h? God help her, but she somehow survived life as a second class citizen in her family of father and brother (brother also had to follow father's dictates, but father was not a bad or evil man, just misguided as most men were in that era).

The bad guys are quite obviously bad guys from the word go (to the reader, at any rate).

A grand little read.
