This early work by E. J. Harrison was originally published in 1934 and we are now republishing it. 'Wrestling - Catch-As-Catch-Can, Cumberland & Westmorland, All-In Styles' is an excellent publication that details the various schools of wrestling and the key holds and manoeuvres in each. It is complete with illustrations and photographs for extra clarity. This is a wonderful work for anyone with an interest in the techniques of wrestling.

This a great book if you want to understand the fundamentals of catch wrestling from the stand-up position, to getting your opponent to the mat. The basics are covered quiet well, the drawings a bit old, but they get the job done. Interesting to note here is that many of the moves that are explained are escapes from disadvantageous position in the stand-up clinch. Book is very old school, but even the hardened grappler can pick up a thing or two while reading it. I highly recommend it!Product details

CATCH WRESTLING IS A COMPLETE GRAPPLING ART AND COULD GIVE BRAZILIAN JUJITSU AND SAMBO AND ANY OTHER MMA MARTIAL ART A RUN FOR IT`S MONEY IF MORE PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT IT. IF YOU WANT TO LEARN TO DOMINATE ON THE MAT OR WHIP SOME BULLY`S BUTT THEN STUDY THIS STYLE. ANOTHER BOOK THAT IS JUST AS GOOD IF NOT BETTER IS "HOW TO WRESTLE" BY FREDERICK R. TOOMBS WHICH I HAVE ALSO REVIEWED AND ALSO "WRESTLING; CATCH AS CATCH CAN STYLE BY EDWARD HICHCOCK AND EARLE LIEDERMAN`S "SCIENCE OF WRESTLING, ART OF JIUJITSU AS WELL. WITH THESE BOOKS YOUR WRESTLING LIBRARY WILL BE COMPLETE. YOU CAN ALSO READ THESE ONLINE BUT IT`S BETTER TO BUY PHYSICAL COPIES SO THAT IF THE POWER GOES OFF YOU WILL STILL BE ABLE TO READ THEM. JESUS IS THE ANSWER AND GOD BLESS YOU )
I didn't buy this book on ; I got it elsewhere and it definitely comes highly recommended. Catch Wrestling has picked up some steam recently, at least amongst the martial arts community. But most still don't know what it is or understand it. So, they say it's just sh*** jujitsu or it's takedowns with bjj. This couldn't be further from the truth. Catch wrestling is essentially folkstyle or freestyle with submissions. In fact, those styles originate from catch, wigan, and the like. If you've ever seen a folkstyle or freestyle match, how the grapplers move and transition is clearly and noticeably different than a typical sport bjj match.
The reason why it's preached that catch is better for amateur wrestlers than bjj (and I'm not picking sides, both catch and bjj are good grappling arts) is the transition to submission wrestling or MMA is easier with catch for those amateur wrestlers. It's just a matter of showing them the submissions available from the typical positions and transitions that they've been accustomed to in folkstyle or freestyle. That really is it in a nutshell. Generally speaking, if you're a catch purist, a typical catch wrestling match includes victory by submission or pin and strangulation holds/chokes are prohibited. Chokes may still be taught, they're just generally barred from catch competitions, similar to how we segment self-defense, law enforcement training, and competitions or how some bjj schools either avoid leg locks at competitions or in rolling unless you'er a high ranking belt.
Since catch competitions are far and few between, competitors must compete in what's available which are usually tournaments skewed towards sport bjj rules.I like bjj but I prefer catch's paradigm of aggression, making the other competitor uncomfortable, and continuously striving for and maintaining dominant position. But that's just me. Again, bjj, catch, sambo, it's all good. It's up to you what your goals are and your comfort or preference.
